What is smog
In cases where “could” is not a verb, this word does not carry anything good. Smog is called air filled with dust, smoke, soot, exhaust gases. Forest fires contribute to air pollution.
One of the dangerous components of smog is carbon monoxide. It’s carbon monoxide and it’s poisonous. Carbon monoxide (CO) hinders transport of oxygen by the blood and in high concentration can lead to death. Dust, toxins, salts of heavy metals also do not make the body healthier.
Smog exacerbates chronic diseases of the respiratory system. Even ordinary-looking dust in a big city is an unsafe phenomenon. In its composition without laboratory analysis you will not understand. Usually the respiratory system is quite effective in cleaning the air. But in some periods it is better to provide additional protection for the lungs. Reasons for this could be:
- forest and peat fires;
- lack of wind, due to which carbon monoxide, suspended solids and hydrocarbons accumulate in one place;
- long absence of precipitation.

How to protect your respiratory system from smog and dust
1. Shorten your walks
During the period of smoke, it is better not to go outside unless absolutely necessary. This is especially true of dawn hours. In the morning, the concentration of smog in the lower atmosphere is higher than in the rest of the time.
2. Drink water, not alcohol
Water will help restore the body’s salt balance and stop dehydration. Green tea or fruit drinks are also suitable. Alcohol and soda, on the contrary, will remove the liquid.
3. Eat right
It is better to refuse heavy fatty foods, its digestion takes a lot of energy from the body, which it could use to process harmful substances. Choose foods that are easy to digest, eat vegetables and fruits. Foods rich in fiber and antioxidants will help flush out toxins from the body.
4. Don’t smoke
Lungs are going through hard times. Tar from a cigarette will give a double load on the body’s natural filters. Moreover, you should not smoke indoors, and this advice should be followed not only during the period of smoke.
5. Do not irritate the respiratory system
It is better to postpone the use of sprays and aerosols, strong-smelling varnishes and paints, shaking dusty textiles from mezzanines until the air becomes a little cleaner.
6. Get out more often
If you do not live in a special shelter, then the apartment is not airtight. Dust and combustion products penetrate rooms and settle on surfaces. Do wet cleaning at least once a day.
You can hang a damp cloth on open windows. Keep in mind that mosquito nets do not protect against smog.
7. Flush your nose
The products of combustion settle in the nasopharynx, so it is useful to rinse the nose and throat with saline or sea water. Special sprays are sold in pharmacies.
8. Use a mask
During periods of maximum smoke, it is best to use a respirator designed to protect against dust, smoke, smog, carbon monoxide.
Respiratory organs can also be protected with a damp gauze bandage. It’s not very efficient, but it’s still better than nothing.

9. Give up physical activity
Exercise makes you breathe faster and deeper, so more harmful substances enter the lungs. Physical exercise, especially in the air, during smoke should be banned, and this also applies to swimming in reservoirs.
10. Turn off the air conditioner
Not every cooling system is suitable for a period of smog. If the air conditioner takes air from the street, a special filter must be installed in it. If not, then the device should not be used.
11. Humidify indoor air
Use a humidifier or at least a spray bottle. Thanks to this, dust will settle faster on surfaces, from where it will be easy to remove it with a wet cloth.
