When hiking in the mountains, people pay a lot of attention to equipment, but they often forget to take the necessary medicines with them. Evgenia Tabe, a traumatologist at the National Medical Research Center (NMRC) of Children’s Health of the Russian Ministry of Health, told KP.RU about what medications might come in handy.

According to her, tourists receive 25% of serious injuries in the mountains in a state of fatigue. People with joint diseases and cardiovascular pathologies get tired much faster and more often.

“The most common injuries in the mountains are soft tissue bruises, sprained or torn ligaments, bone fractures, spinal injuries, and head injuries.”said the physician.

First aid for injuries in the mountains

  1. First you need to call rescuers by walkie-talkie, telephone or in any other way available to you. In extreme cases, send for help to any person nearby.
  2. If the victim is unconscious, it is necessary to check if his tongue is sunken and if there is breathing. Then put the head of the injured person on a flat surface and position the tongue so that it does not interfere with the airways.
  3. It is not recommended to move the victim, especially if there is a suspicion of an injury to the spine or skull. This does not apply to cases where there is nowhere to wait for help.
  4. It is necessary to provide the victim with warmth.
  5. In case of dislocation, it is necessary to immobilize the affected limb, apply snow or ice (if any), and, if possible, anesthetize. No need to try to straighten the dislocation on your own.
  6. Fractures may be open, but are more often closed. It is necessary to fix the bone with a splint above and below the fracture in the position that it is. It is best to place the tires on both sides of the damage.
  7. When falling, hitting the head, back, finding a person lying unconscious, spinal injury cannot be ruled out.
