In the event that a child goes to bed late and does not sleep for a sufficient number of hours, his immunity decreases, the nervous and digestive systems suffer. Elena Meskina, Professor of the Department of Pediatrics, Head of the Department of Pediatric Infectious Diseases of the Moscow Regional Research Institute named after Vladimirsky, spoke about this.

“The hormonal rhythm is of fundamental importance. At night, certain biologically active substances are produced, for example, melatonin, which ensures a restful sleep. And, secondly, it is the interaction with the immune system”, she said in an interview with URA.RU.

The expert explained that if the child does not “sleep out” a certain number of hours and goes to bed after 23, the biological rhythm of hormone production is disrupted. In turn, this leads to a violation of the immune and nervous systems, digestion. The child becomes more excitable, learns worse learning, gets sick more often, and is also susceptible to respiratory infections.

According to her, there is a certain number of hours that a child needs to sleep. He needs to sleep at least 12 hours a day. In the event that the child does not have daytime sleep, he should fall asleep at 22:00 maximum. And those children who are less than a year old – at 20:00.

Meskina stressed that sleep is important for teenagers and children approaching the age of puberty, as hormones are linked to the nervous system. They affect blood pressure, hormonal functions, including sex hormones, appetite, obesity, reproductive function, and cardiovascular activity. It is during sleep that hormonal changes occur, so adolescents should, in principle, go to bed on time before the onset of sexual development.
