Movement helps to think creatively – the main thing is to have freedom of movement. Even just walking around the room back and forth helps to come up with something new and unexpected.

These are the conclusions reached by scientists from the University of W├╝rzburg. To do this, they conducted a study, the results of which were published in the journal Psychological Research.

The study included three experiments. In each of these experiments, 60 volunteers between the ages of 18 and 35 were asked to complete an “alternative use of Guildford” task. That is, come up with as many extraordinary ways as possible to use everyday items, such as bricks, toothbrushes, towels, pencils and others.

During the first experiment, some of the participants were sitting, and some were walking around the room. The second group did better. In the next two trials, some volunteers walked freely around the room, while others walked along a certain trajectory. The rest either sat at the computer screen in the same position, or could move without getting up from their chair.

These experiments showed that creativity was markedly reduced when participants were unable to move freely. The performance of the participants was assessed by the researchers on a ten-point scale. Thus, the average creativity score for free walking was 7.2 points, for limited walking along a certain trajectory – 3.6, for free sitting – 7.1, and for limited sitting – 3.1 points.

Our research shows that movement alone does not help us think more flexibly. Freedom of self-determined movements is responsible for this. That is, the main thing is the possibility of movement without external restrictions,

To become more creative, you just need to walk around the room / Photo frame from the movie “Monty Python’s Flying Circus”

Scientists have proven that the presence of any restrictions significantly reduces creativity. Or perhaps this is due to the fact that creativity simply does not tolerate any patterns, both external and internal.
